What do IP ratings mean for marina pedestals?

Short answer: an IP rating shows how well an electrical enclosure keeps out dust and water. For marina service pedestals, IP66 is a sensible minimum: the first 6 means fully dust-tight, the second 6 means protected against powerful water jets from any direction. That covers wave splash, storms and pontoon washdown with pressure hoses, which are everyday conditions on a marina.

How to read an IP code

The IP (Ingress Protection) code has two digits:

  • First digit (0–6): solids and dust. 5 means dust-protected; 6 means dust-tight.

  • Second digit (0–9): water. The higher the number, the harsher the water exposure the enclosure has passed.

What the second digit means in practice:

  • 4: splashing water from any direction

  • 5: low-pressure water jets

  • 6: powerful water jets

  • 7: temporary immersion, up to 1 m

  • 8: continuous immersion, as agreed with the manufacturer

An "X" in place of a digit (for example IPX6) means that part was not tested.

Why IP66 rather than IP67

IP67 is not simply "better" than IP66. They are different tests: IP66 uses strong water jets, while IP67 uses short immersion. An enclosure can pass one and fail the other. A pedestal stands above the water and faces jets and driving rain, so IP66 is the relevant test for the body. Sockets are different: they sit lower, collect standing water and are handled every day, so IP67 sockets are a good choice.

Why it matters on a marina

  • Safety: water inside a live enclosure causes earth faults and tripping, and in the worst case puts people on the pontoon at risk.

  • Reliability: salt water and humidity corrode terminals, meters and electronics. Every leak shortens the pedestal's life.

  • Running costs: a poorly sealed pedestal means more service calls, more failed components and more downtime for berths.

IP is not the whole picture

Also check the IK rating (impact resistance; IK10 is the highest), UV resistance of the body, the operating temperature range, and whether the ratings come from an independent test report rather than a datasheet claim.

Meqtec pedestals

Meqtec's tested marina pedestals are rated IP66 and use IP67 CEE sockets with spring-loaded, lockable covers. The Trima XL body is also rated IK10. Bodies are UV-protected HDPE, and pedestals operate from −30 °C to +60 °C. See the Trima and Trima XL pages or the full Marina Series. Related guide: What determines pedestal price?
